Balciuin is a new but traditional style house, backing on to The River Nethy but overlooking The Abernethy Forest and The Cairngorms at the eastern edge of Nethy Bridge . Nethybridge is in ‘Monarch of The Glen’ country deep in The Cairngorm National Park. Nethy is 12 miles from Aviemore, 6 miles from Grantown-on-Spey, 4 miles from Boat of Garten, 30 miles from The Moray Firth and 35 miles from Inverness.
Inverness, situated at the northeastern end of The Great Glen, close to Loch Ness is a route centre and very much the capital of The Highlands and Islands. It is a 45 minute drive from Nethy Bridge and offers good shopping, eating, theatre, clubs and cinemas. Aviemore is young, vibrant, about outdoor activities and has a selection of shops catering for these sports. Grantown is a quieter more sedate Victorian Town.
All the rooms at Balciuin B&B offer spectacular, uninterrupted views over the aforementioned Abernethy Forest to the Cairngorm Mountains. You can enjoy a clear view of the Funicular Railway top station and the summit of Cairngorm as well as the Northern Corries, Bynackbeg and Bynackmor. In the foreground you see Meall a Bhuachaille rising out of The Abernethy Forest, home to many rare species including capercaillie, crested tits, crossbills, pine martins and abundant red squirrels.
From Balciuin there is easy access to the network of walks and cycle routes as well as the long distance routes across The Cairngorm National Park towards Braemar. Nethy Bridge is a convenient place to stop when walking The Speyside Way which follows the River Spey from Aviemore to Buckie on The Moray Firth. Much of The Abernethy Forest is owned by SNH and by the RSPB. Just 4 miles away is Loch Garten , famous not only for its beauty and walks but for the RSPB Osprey Centre and the annual Capercaillie Watch.
Findhorn on the Moray Firth is only 45minutes away by car and is at the western edge of the 7 mile bay ending at Burghead. There you can watch the boats in the sheltered water of the inner bay or look for dolphins and seals in The Moray Firth. Water sports are available locally on Loch Morlich and Loch Inch with equipment and tuition readily available or you can experience the thrill of rapids up to grade 5 on the fast water of The Findhorn.
There is easy access to the Speyside Way, the RSPB reserve including Loch Garten with its Ospreys, Loch Morlich with its beach and water activities, Fishing on The River Spey , Cairngorm Mountain and the funicular railway, Aviemore with its range of sport activities and also the beautiful Moray Coast with its beaches and dolphins. You can walk or bike through the Ryvoan Pass to Glenmore and there is an extensive network of walks and cycle routes both on and off road in Nethybridge, Rothiemurchus and throughout the whole of StrathSpey. It is also possible to walk from Balciuin to Braemar through the mountains without crossing a single road! For the less active it is only a 3-4 minute walk to one of the new red squirrel feeding stations on the lovely riverside walk which follows the River Nethy to the centre of the village.
Nethy Bridge, protected by The Abernethy Forest and lying in the shadow of Cairngorm enjoys a dry microclimate. It provides an excellent base to enjoy the many activities the area has to offer. At Balciuin you can be assured of a warm welcome, excellent food and exceptionally comfortable accommodation.
